Registration of Deaths

What you should know...
  • Only District Registrars of Births and Deaths can register deaths.
  • There is no cost to register a death.
  • No burial should occur without first registering the death.
Registration: where, when, by whom
  • Where: at the Registrar nearest to where the person died
  • When: within five (5) days of the death
  • By whom: by the nearest relative, who was present at the death
There are additional District Registrars now located at:
  • Port of Spain General Hospital
  • San Fernando General Hospital
  • Mt. Hope Maternity Hospital
  • Sangre Grande County Hospital
Documents needed to register are:
  • Cause of Death Certificate (issued by Doctor in attendance to the Deceased)
  • Identification document of Deceased (ID card, Passport, Driver's Permit)
  • Personal identification of the relative doing the registration

Death Certificates

Certificates can be obtained at:
• Registration House, South Quay, POS
• 32 Pro Queen St., Arima
• Birjah Building, cor. Rushworth & Independence Ave., San Fernando
• Jerningham St. Scarborough, Tobago

Certificates cost $25 and are issued within five (5) working days
