Weights and Measures Inspectorate
The Inspectorate is a division of the Ministry of Legal
Affairs which is responsible for the enforcement of
the Weights and Measures, Ordinance chapter 31, No.
15 and regulations made thereunder. The Inspectorate
has been set up to ensure that weighing and measuring
instruments utilized in trade are correct and exact.
Traders, retailers, even market vendors must visit a
stamping station of the Weights and Measures Inspectorate
annually to ensure that their scales and other measuring
instruments are approved by Inspectors. Inspectors also
visit traders and retailers and gas stations to carry
out checks on measuring instruments.
The responsibilities of the Weights and Measures Inspectorate
are:
- To enforce the Weights and Measures Ordinance and
Regulations
- To prosecute offenders for breaches of the Statutes
- To ensure that weighing and measuring instruments
used for trade are ‘just’ and issue certificates
for weights and measures which are found to be correct
- To check the weight of pre-packaged goods to make
certain that they are correct
- To assist other departments and agencies by performing
allied functions and giving relevant information
- To conduct lecture/demonstrations to consumer groups
and other interested parties on the functions of the
Inspectorate for the purpose of empowering consumers
- To explain regulations and functions to vendors
with a view of minimizing offences
