Why shouldn’t I buy pirated music CDs and DVD movies?

You should not buy pirated music CDs and DVD movies because: -

You deprive the copyright owner of remuneration for his work.

Copyright protection is vested in original CDs and DVDs. The copyright owner, for example, the producer or songwriter or composer or publisher has a series of exclusive rights. These rights include the right to authorize or prohibit the reproduction of the work. Pirated music CDs and DVD movies are unauthorized copies, for which, the copyright owner does not receive any payment.

Piracy has a deleterious effect upon the economic livelihood of entertainers and by extension, persons who work in the entertainment industry. Already in Trinidad and Tobago, well-known entertainers have indicated that they will not release new music locally due to the fact that they have suffered serious economic loss on account of the piracy of their works.

Pirated music CDs and DVD movies are illegal.

By purchasing pirated music CDs and DVD movies you directly support an illegal activity. The sale of pirated music CDs and DVD movies constitute an infringement of the copyright owner’s rights. Pursuant to section 41 of the Copyright Act 1997, any person who commits an act of copyright infringement is liable on summary conviction to a fine of One Hundred Thousand Dollars ($100,000.00) and to imprisonment for ten years.

You stifle creativity.

Copyright is intended to encourage creativity by providing incentives to the copyright owner in the form of economic rewards and due recognition for the use of the work. If the copyright owner loses control over the copying of his work, as occurs when works are pirated, the copyright owner has no economic incentive to continue producing it. This will eventually culminate in the death of the local entertainment industry. On a larger scale, persons involved in entertainment would not be willing to make their works available in Trinidad and Tobago if aware that the works would be pirated.

You would not receive the best quality product.

The quality of pirated goods is usually not as good as that of the authentic product. The sound and/or visual images are not as clear. Pirated goods may not work on certain machines. Additionally, the product is unlikely to include inserts showing the words of the songs or giving an account of the making of the movie. If you receive a defective pirated product, you have no recourse. It is your loss.

PIRACY IS THEFT. DON’T SUPPORT ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES!
